چکیده

We describe how a behind-the-scenes production crew managed participation in an on-line improvised dramatic performance in a shared virtual world that was broadcast to viewers. We introduce the approach of collaboratively improvising magic, where participants indirectly request interactions with objects through extended incantations, rather than manipulating them directly. Invisible stage-hands follow these participants around the world, monitoring their activities and granting requests when appropriate. We describe how this was realised in Avatar Farm, a two hour long improvised drama that involved four members of the public, seven actors and an extensive production crew. We discuss the provision of technical support within the MASSIVE-3 system to realise our approach. Empirical analysis of interaction in Avatar Farm illustrates some key issues. We see how participants weave accounts of technical problems into the narrative; how actors vary the pacing of the narrative to co-ordinate the timing of a local scene in relation to parallel scenes that are happening elsewhere; amongst other matters. We conclude with some general lessons from our approach for

MyReDiary: Co-Designing for Collaborative Articulation in Physical Rehabilitation

In this paper we present our exploration of co-designing for supporting a collaborative articulation of rehabilitation process. Based on our reading of key CSCW literature, we describe three facets of a collaboratively articulated rehab process: Interdependence, Distributed Process, and Interoperability. We highlight Magic-MirrorSpiral, the design ideal guiding the co-designing of MyReDiary tha...

The Roles of Technology in Improvising

A growing number of organizational researchers are using the framework of improvising to make sense of the process of innovation in dynamic environments. The roles of technologies in such improvising, however, have all but been ignored in this literature. Drawing on the theoretical perspectives of structuration theory (Giddens 1984) and technologies-inpractice (Orlikowski 2000), I first develop...

Differential parietal and temporal contributions to music perception in improvising and score-dependent musicians, an fMRI study

Using fMRI, cerebral activations were studied in 24 classically-trained keyboard performers and 12 musically unskilled control subjects. Two groups of musicians were recruited: improvising (n=12) and score-dependent (non-improvising) musicians (n=12). While listening to both familiar and unfamiliar music, subjects either (covertly) appraised the presented music performance or imagined they were...

$Z_k$-Magic Labeling of Some Families of Graphs

For any non-trivial abelian group A under addition a graph $G$ is said to be $A$-textit{magic}  if there exists a labeling $f:E(G) rightarrow A-{0}$ such that, the vertex labeling $f^+$  defined as $f^+(v) = sum f(uv)$ taken over all edges $uv$ incident at $v$ is a constant. An $A$-textit{magic} graph $G$ is said to be $Z_k$-magic graph if the group $A$ is $Z_k$  the group of integers modulo $k...

Tangible Purposes and Common Beacons: The Interrelated Roles of Identity and Technology in Collaborative Endeavors

Drawing on structuration theory, research on improvising, technologies-in-practice, organizational identity, and examples of collaborative endeavors from an eight-month field study I conducted at an internet-based startup, I propose that an essential structure to collaboration is a complementary set of understandings between participants regarding the purpose of their collective endeavor what I...
